Power Rankings - Week #9

NFLL

Anybody want to meet up for poker or at Ale House for Sunday games? Shoot me a text.

Hard to even see much of a cut-off still. Usually there are some "locks", and then the "contenders" and then a sharp drop-off with the "bottom of the pack".  At this point we have one team leading with 6 wins, five teams with 5 and then about eight teams with 3 or more wins. You can't give up at this point if you want to make the playoffs. Even if you are at 3 wins right now you are still in the hunt!!! And technically even the 2 win-teams have a shot mathematically... Play to win!

Had a couple good questions this week. One was a real thinker which prompted a new outlook on RULE #1.  I hate to add changes mid-season, but this will prevent a headache in the future if this scenario ever happens.  So here is a little refresher on the rules of the NFLL and some Q&A.
Asked twice this week:
"I have people on a bye, and can't fill all my roster spots. Do I have to drop somebody to fill them."
Rule #2 - You have to set your roster every week. You must fill all spaces with an able bodied player(s) from your bench.
However, you do not have to drop any player to fill the spaces. So NO you do not have to drop any player whether back-up or starter, on bye, injured, on IR, just to fill-in for a bye week.  That is the GM's choice, he is not "forgetting" to fill his roster, he is simply choosing to take a zero in that roster space.  (See IPSux roster in week 8). That is definitely legal and there is no penalty.

Which prompted the following damn good question:
"What if I have the lead and my opponent has no more players left to play, can I bench my remaining player(s) so as not to risk getting negative points?
 - Technically under rule #2 you have to fill all spaces with able bodied players. However...
Rule #1 - PLAY TO WIN
Commish is ruling that as long as the roster was set Sunday morning,  then it is a strategic move to bench the remaining player(s) and that is allowable since that GM is essentially playing to win.  I could see this happening more often with Kickers and Quarterbacks since they are more likely to get negative points.
*All GM's must keep in mind that every point makes a difference and total points scored could be a tie breaker when it comes to playoff seeding. Not to mention that if you are starting a player that you fear will have negative impact on your team, you need to really consider why you have a player like that on your roster. As well as the NFL can post stat corrections at any time, some I have seen as many as 5 days later. That small lead can disappear in an instant.

So to make to sure you all understand, please read the following example:
Going into Monday night football, Team A has 130 points with a QB to play and Team B has 128 points with no players left.  Team A can bench his QB so as not to risk any negative points and take the win right then and there.  That is definitely legal and there will be no penalty.
The main stipulation is the team must be set prior the weekends games and then the player must be waived or benched sometime before kick-off.

Question:
"How do they determine division leaders, what are the tie-breakers?"
The first factor is overall record, the team with the best overall record in your division will win it and be guaranteed a top 4 seed to the playoffs. If multiple teams are tied, the first tie-breaker is division wins (Ex: See KC and JR in Hail Division), If teams are still tied the tie-breaker is overall points.
The benefits of winning your division, free ride to playoffs, a $$$ prize, bragging and naming rights.
So if you finish 6-0 in your division but 6-7 overall and somebody in your division finishes 7-6...you lost your division.

"How is  playoff seeding handled?"
After the divisions are settled, those 4 teams are ranked by record (best record = #1 seed and so on), the 4 remaining wild card teams are placed #5-#8 by overall record, if multiple teams are tied, then the first tie-breaker is points. POINTS POINTS POINTS...there is no benefit of "heads-up wins" or "conference wins" or "division wins" or "non-conference wins vs. Hawaiian teams in the month of October" or anything else you knuckleheads come up with....  You need points. (Great example: See HM and SX in overall standings)

Division play starts up again this week for some teams, look sharp!  Good luck in week #9 and Happy Holloween!

1.  ^  KILLA CALI (5-3/2-2) 144 ppg [1]  {5} $
Sneaks in by default really, four of the top 5 lose this week. I know its killing those 5 coaches that voted for me too...tee hee!

2. v   HaTeRs (5-3/3-1) 148 ppg [2]
Great division game vs. Monkeys this week. No doubt will be a good one.  At least I know now why he calls himself HaTeRs, he hates winning...and women.

3.  v   THE AGENCY  (6-2/3-1) 137 ppg [3]  {1}
Two game losing streak keeps him from taking the #1 spot back.

4. ^  JERU (R.I.P.)  (5-3/4-0) 135 ppg [5]
Jeru's winning streak is cut short with loss vs. Dandies. However season sweep over KC gives him the edge over Cocoon. Great week to catch a game against a Buckeyes team in complete turmoil though.

5. v  COCOON OF HORROR (5-3/3-1) 138 ppg [4]
That loss did not help in what is the closest division race in the league.

6.  ^  $HAIL-MARY$ (4-4/1-3) 137 ppg [6]
Takes advantage of all the losses and grabs a much needed win vs. Monkeys.  Sneaks into the top 6.
Can he keep it up? This week is 2012 Cane/Able bowl part II...

7. -  INDIGOPALMSSUCKS (5-3/3-1) 117 ppg [8]
Just an ugly win last week, but a wins a win in this league.  And its enough to keep him in tight contention for the division champ.  I don't want to instigate and not that you need a pep talk or extra motivation to help you beat Heels this week, but she and her friend ate at Tommy Bahamas restaurant....and the fucker liked it!

8. v  BLIND MONKEY$ (4-4/2-2) 137 ppg [7]
You got to put Hail down man...When you get him against the ropes, you finish him off!!!!!!!!!! Great match-up this week vs. Haters. Should be game of the week.  and next time... Sweep the leg damnit!!!!!

9.  ^  THE 619ERS (4-4/2-2) 135 ppg [9]
Still on the bubble, needs to make a move.  If playoffs started today he would be 17 points out.

10. v  BUCKEYES (4-4/2-2) 125 ppg [11]   $
Needs to grab a much needed win here vs. Jeru to slide into the top 8.

11. ^ DIAPER DANDIES (3-5/2-2) 130ppg [10]
Great win this week, I personally would like to thank you for beating Jeru, something I couldn't accomplish this year. His 3 wins (H8, JR BM) this year all quality which bumps him ahead of DS.  The New and improved Two-Times is up next, so does that make him Two Times Squared, or Two Times to the Second, Two-Times times two? or maybe 2X2??? Whatever, Mitchy up next in week 9.

12. v  D's NUTZ (4-4/2-2) 122 ppg [12]
Ouch, that had to hurt. Sorry man.    Will you be able to recover and beat Doh this week?

13. (Tie) ^ TWO-TIMES (3-5/1-3) 116 ppg [15]
Looks like he is out of the cellar for good at this point. Be nice to get the ppg up though.   A win versus Dandies this week will keep him moving up the charts.  Most likely will still need to win out but he is doing his part.

13. (Tie) ^  TRUESOLE (3-5/0-4) 119 ppg [14]
Win vs Agency bumps him up 3 spots this week!  It's been a real tough schedule so far but he has taken down 2 of the big dogs...Has big division game vs Cocoon up next.

13. (Tie) ^ D'OH BOYS (2-6/1-3) 136ppg [13]
Finally breaks the spell.  Can he turn it into a winning streak?

16.  v GO HEELS! (2-6/1-3) 121 ppg [16]
Just unfortunate to be the team that breaks Doh's streak.  Can't let up though, IP has been down of late and great opportunity to grab a win here.

****GAMES OF THE WEEK****
#2 HaTeRs vs. #8 Blind Monkeys
Big division game for these two.

#1 KILLA CALI vs. #6  $Hail-Mary$
Definitely no love here, this is the ultimate rivalry in this league.
